I was wondering if one side could use the first generation of Airpods and the other side could use the second generation of Airpods.

 

As shown in the photo below, it is difficult to distinguish the first and second generation only by the AirPod body.

The left side is the first generation of Airpods and the right side is the second generation of Airpods.

 

Second Generation Airpods fit in the first generation charging case and charge.

The left side is the first generation of Airpods and the right side is the second generation of Airpods.

 

The Airpods Generation 1 and Airpods Generation 2 cases differ slightly from each other.

Second generation Airpods have a wireless charging case and a charging light on the front of the charger.

That doesn't mean you can't use it.

 

You only need to put one in the charger and then pair each one separately.

 The sound comes out to the connected side later, and when one side is pulled out, the other side is automatically connected and the sound continues.
